The UNITAR story

UNITAR has been adapting its methodologies and approaches to reflect the changing times and address the ever-evolving needs of participants in order to empower leaders of the futures.

Past

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) was born in 1963, in a moment of hope for international collaboration and human progress. In this period of hope, ambition and transition, UNITAR came together with “the unique purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations itself” through training and research.

Present

Today, UNITAR’s learners come from all 193 UN Member States, benefiting from the diverse range of learning programmes which aim to help individuals and organizations achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

A commemorative stamp has been issued in April 2023 for the celebration of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) 60th Anniversary. The stamp sheets are available in the UN Stamps in New York and in Geneva, and online.
